Invisalign attachments are small tooth-coloured composite shapes bonded to selected teeth to help aligners apply planned forces. Whether you need them, and where they go, depends on your treatment plan. They may be visible; an assessment should explain their purpose and care.

Why attachments may be part of your plan

Attachments give aligners something to grip for particular tooth movements. They are bonded composite, not metal brackets. Their position and shape are planned for the individual teeth.[1][2]

Aligners have limitations, and fixed braces may be another option after assessment. Our Invisalign and fixed-braces comparison introduces that separate decision; attachments alone do not establish suitability.[2]

Three questions about Invisalign attachment purpose, appearance and what to do if an attachment feels loose.
Questions to discuss with your dental team; the graphic does not decide whether you need attachments.[1][2]

Appearance, fitting and removal

Tooth-coloured does not mean invisible. Ask which front teeth may have attachments. They are bonded at an appointment and removed professionally when your clinician decides they are no longer needed.[1][2]

A loose attachment or uncomfortable aligner

Tell your treating team if an attachment feels loose or comes off. Ask what to do with your current aligner before changing your plan. Do not attempt home removal or repair.[1]

Soreness can occur during orthodontic treatment. If discomfort is significant or persistent, or your gums are red or swollen, seek advice from your dental team.[3][4]

Dental health, alternatives and retention

Orthodontic treatment is not risk-free: poor cleaning can contribute to decay and gum damage, and tooth roots can shorten. Discuss your dental history and individual risks before deciding. Choosing no elective treatment is also an option.[4]

Teeth can move back after treatment. Read our retainers after Invisalign guide and follow your own retention instructions.[3]

Invisalign & straightening: your questions on this topic

Does everyone having Invisalign need attachments?

No fixed number applies to everyone. The clinician plans which teeth need attachments for the intended movements and should explain your own plan.

Are Invisalign attachments invisible?

No. They are tooth-coloured, but they can be noticeable, particularly on front teeth. Ask where your proposed attachments will sit.

What if an attachment comes off?

Contact your treating dental team for advice. Follow their instructions for aligner wear and replacement; do not glue or remove attachments yourself.

Will I still need retainers after attachments are removed?

Removing attachments does not replace retention. Your clinician should explain your retainer plan to help limit teeth moving back.
