After Invisalign, expect to use retainers long term to help keep your teeth aligned. Your dentist will give you an individual wear schedule, which may include more wear at first and nights later. Finishing your aligners does not mean retention is finished: discuss ongoing care before treatment starts.

For anyone considering Invisalign in Birmingham, the last aligner is only one part of the plan. Ask about retention before starting treatment, so you understand the ongoing routine and costs as well as the time spent straightening your teeth.

Why are retainers needed after Invisalign?

Aligners move teeth; retainers help maintain their position afterwards. The surrounding tissues need time to adapt, and teeth can move again if retention is neglected. This movement is called relapse. The NHS describes retainers as an important part of care after orthodontic treatment.[2]

How long should you wear them?

The British Orthodontic Society recommends planning for long-term retention, often lifelong. That does not mean everyone follows the same daily schedule. Some people need an initial period of more frequent wear; others are advised to wear removable retainers at night from the outset. Follow your own dentist's instructions rather than a schedule found online.[1]

Removable and fixed retainers compared

TypeHow it worksWhat to plan for
Clear removable retainerFits over the teeth and is taken out when instructed.Remembering wear, safe storage and cleaning.
Wire-and-acrylic removable retainerA removable appliance with a wire and plastic plate.Your clinician will explain its particular care routine.
Fixed retainerA wire bonded behind selected teeth.Careful cleaning and regular checks for loose bonds.

Retainer choice depends on your individual needs. A fixed retainer is not maintenance-free, and removable retainers can need replacement. Ask your clinician which option or combination is appropriate; this guide does not promise a particular appliance at Cadbury.

Looking after a clear removable retainer

  • Use the cleaning method recommended for your appliance. Cold water and a separate brush are commonly advised.
  • Avoid hot water, which can distort plastic. Check with your clinician before using toothpaste or a cleaning product.
  • Keep it in a protective case when it is out of your mouth.
  • Follow instructions about removal for meals and drinks, and continue regular dental check-ups.

What if it is lost, broken or uncomfortable?

Contact your treating practice promptly if your retainer is lost, damaged, loose or uncomfortable. A retainer that no longer fits needs assessment; do not try to heat or reshape it yourself. A loose fixed retainer also needs checking because the affected teeth may move.[3]

  1. 1Explain what happened and when you last wore the retainer.
  2. 2Keep the appliance and bring it to an appointment if requested.
  3. 3Ask what to do while waiting for assessment or a replacement.

Replacement charges and arrangements vary. An NHS hospital's published fee is not Cadbury's fee, so ask the practice for its current price and what your original treatment quote includes.

Planning Invisalign care in Bournville

Cadbury Dental Practice is at 29 Sycamore Road, Bournville, Birmingham, B30 2AA. Use the Invisalign enquiry route to discuss treatment and ask how retention would be included in your individual plan. If you are already receiving care elsewhere, contact your treating clinician about immediate retainer problems.

Useful questions include: Are retainers included in my quote? Which type is proposed? What happens if one breaks? Are review appointments or replacement retainers charged separately? This makes aftercare part of an informed treatment decision.

Invisalign & straightening: your questions on this topic

Can I stop wearing retainers once my teeth look straight?

Do not stop or reduce wear without discussing it with your treating clinician. Teeth can move after active treatment, and retention is intended to protect the result long term.

Does a fixed retainer mean I can forget about aftercare?

No. Fixed retainers need careful cleaning and checks. Contact your clinician if the wire or a bond feels loose.

Are replacement retainers included in Invisalign treatment?

This depends on your treatment agreement. Ask Cadbury for a written explanation of what is included and any ongoing or replacement charges.
